Pererenan Beach, Canggu, October 18th and 19th
Glassy 3-foot peaks welcomed Indonesian surfers to the 2nd Annual Rusty Rumble In Da Jungle at Pererenan Beach, Canggu. This contest is the final stop on the Indonesian Surfing Championship tour, so all the boys were eager to finish the year with a good result.
Heats were contested on both the ‘Sand Bar’ left and the river mouth Right. The contest director and judges chose to hold heats on both breaks simultaneously to take advantage of the great conditions. There was the threat of rain and wind, but fortunately for everyone, the waves stayed glassy throughout both days.
Stand out surfers on day 1 were Ketut Suartana, Made Switra, and Wayan Mertha “Betet”. Betet was on fire; he went to town on the Right with a combination of hooks and reverses that left him as the crowd favourite. Unfortunately the new ISC Champ, Made Adi Putra “Bol” was knocked out in round 3, but he stayed at the beach to watch the remaining heats, with a Bintang by his side.
The event was originally scheduled for the 8th and 9th, but had to be postponed due to the untimely deaths of two legends in the surfing community, Bapak Wayan Suwenda and Bapak Made Sabar. To pay their last respects, the surfers paddled out together to form a circle in the ocean, and observe a moment of silence, before sharing a few rides on the way in.
The swell had dropped slightly on day 2, but the waves were still glassy and fun. The heats from the quarterfinals onwards were man-on-man, still using both breaks. In the semi finals Komang Sujaya “Gogo” and Wayan Wirtama “Kopling” went blow for blow on the left, when the scores were tallied it was Gogo who edged through. Dedi Santosa squeaked past Wayan Mertha “Betet” in their semi by .33 of a point. Betet was visibly disappointed; he has yet to win an ISC event. So the final was going to be contested by two young guns, Gogo and Dedi, both from the Kuta area.
Before the final Electric Visual held an expression session heat, awarding 1 million rupiah to the surfer who pulled the best aerial, and another mil to the surfer who performed the most radical moves on a wave. There was action left, right, and centre as Indo’s hottest talent launched off ramps and buried rails. Bol pulled a huge backside air 360 but Prayit took the ‘Best Air’ title when he stomped a tweaked frontside air 360. Marlon Gerber took the ‘Best Wave Surfed’ category with a series of radical fin busts and critical tail drop floaters.
The final was a one sided affair. Gogo decided to surf the Sand Bar left, and Dedi paddled out to the Right, which turned on for the final. Dedi tore through the sets with his arching cutbacks and vertical snaps, riding three set waves before Gogo paddled over. Gogo has reached the finals twice this year, and has finished runner up on both occasions. Congratulations to Dedi Santosa who took home to 2005 Rusty Rumble In Da Jungle trophy and bagged 10 million rupiah for his trouble!
Final Results:
1. Dedi Santosa
2. Komang Sujaya “Gogo”
3. Wayan Mertha “Betet”
4. Wayan Wirtama “Kopling”
