Rusty’s Rumble In Da Jungle surf comp at Canggu on 19th September was the fifth event of the 2004 Indonesian Surfing Championships. The four-star rated event saw competitors fight it out for valuable ratings points and some hard earned cash.
The contest kicked off at 7:45am in wedgy 3 foot peaks at Canggu’s Sandbar. Most of the first round was held there with Wayan Neka, Lee Wilson, and Made Adi Putra ‘Bol’ being the standout surfers. At high tide the officials moved the heats to Canggu Right, which was going offff! A slight cross-shore breeze blew into the Right that provided perfect conditions for radical surfing. Rusty team rider Marlon Gerber boosted a huge air in his heat, as did aerialist James Catto, who landed a massive 360 punt on the inside shore break. Catto came over from West Oz especially for this contest, and turned heads with his futuristic surfing.
DJ Fadi of Sweden rocked the beach while MC Jarut commentated. The spectators came by the bemo-load and the locals cruised by to see what all the fuss was about. Sexy Rusty models strutted down the beach wearing the latest swimwear, and also posed with competitors and spectators for photos. Perfect waves, sexy models, pumping music, and cold beers... Does life get any better?!
Komang Sujaya, Made Awan, Made Adi Putra ‘Bol’, and Pepen Hendrix ripped through to the final, which was moved to the Sandbar peak with the decreasing tide. Bol caught a set towards the start of the heat and let loose with a barrage of critical maneuvers, which left his fellow competitors playing catch up. Komang and Pepen couldn’t find any long waves in the shifty conditions. Bol finished in 1st place and received six million rupiah. He is the 2004 Rusty Rumble In Da Jungle champ!
Final Results:
1st. Made Adi Putra ‘Bol’
2nd. Komang Sujaya
3rd. Pepen Hendrix
4th. Made Awan
